. i tried installing using a CD i got from friends. it says it "can't find product.cab in one of the archive folders" and installation does not go further...so can't use that cd.

schools generally do not make the softwares available for students. try contacting some of your professors instead. it may work, i got some softwares directly from one of my profs.
