Would you guys pls suggest me the best antivirus software.Normally i just use my laptop for checking emails and surfing secure sites like sajha, kantipuronline and BBC.

As my two free months subscription on norton is going to expire soon, i want to install new software which is value for money.

Also are free softwares like Avast or AVG any good?

 AVG works great for me. I bought a one-year subscription of Norton last year, which expired few months ago. AVG works better than Norton for me. Free does not mean its a bad product.

AVG can be pain sometime with their pop up. Try this one, which is way better. I've used it for many years, no problem.
